FAQ

You have questions, we have answers.

Q.What is Layer8Insight?

Layer8Insight generates Windows & VDI User Experience (UX) metrics. It reports real-time UX data for active application usage, wait times, logon delays, web loading and more.

Q.How does Layer8Insight work?

An ultra-small, non-intrusive software agent is deployed to the designated PC, server, or virtual system. The agent sends or records the collected data such that a designated consumer (e.g., Splunk) can generate reports or alerts.

Q.Is Layer8Insight easy to install?

Yes. Layer8Insight is deleivered as standard MSI packages and helpful scripts. Layer8Insight has NO prerequisites ‐ None. No appliances required. No dependencies on .NET. No driver-level or kernel-level instrumentation.

Q.What is the load on a system?

The Layer8Insight agent uses negligible processor, less than 20 MB of RAM and generates less than 1 MB of data per user, per day (i.e., your Splunk license won't suffer).

Q.Can I get this data out of existing reporting systems?

No. This data has never before been available. Layer8Insight is unique and complements existing technologies. There are many tools which monitor Machine Data ‐ memory, processor and disk usage of computers, servers and virtualization platforms, but this data does not provide metrics for user satisfaction based on actual user activity and their perceptions.

Q.Can Layer8Insight integrate into XYZ reporting systems?

Layer8Insight data is very structured, follows a defined schema and is available in multiple formats (e.g., XML, CSV, JSON and NVP). This means getting the data into another system and extracting the fields is generally straightforward. Layer8Insight can transport the data using a variety of protocols: TCP, UDP, FTP, HTTP and direct I/O to disk.

Q.What operating systems are supported?

The same Layer8Insight binaries run on any Windows-based system from Microsoft Windows XP SP3 through Windows 10. Windows 32-bit or 64-bit, physical and virtual, laptops, desktops, servers, terminal servers, Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, Hyper-V, VMware Horizon, App-V, POS systems and many other virtualization platforms.

Q.Which VDI / remote desktop platforms are supported?

Layer8Insight has been tested on most major virtualization platforms including configurations for VDI, hosted applications and hosted desktops.

  • Citrix VDI, XenApp & XenDesktop
  • VMWare Horizon
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop Services
  • Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) and RemoteApp
  • Microsoft Terminal Server

Q.Can Layer8Insight be used for Software Asset Management?

Yes. Layer8Insight collects information on system usage, including active application use. Concurrent application use and per user access is captured, enabling compliance verification with various licensing models. The data is so accurate and comprehensive that it can verify the actual time an application was actively used ‐ not just opened.

Q.What about privacy?

Layer8Insight is designed to meet any privacy requirements. Under no circumstances does Layer8Insight record or monitor key strokes, mouse clicks, screen captures or any other user content. Where it is not permitted to collect user-identifiable data, such as in Germany, Layer8Insight is easily configured to enable anonymization.

Q.Does Layer8Insight run on Linux or Mac OSX?

Not currently. These platforms are in development.

Q.Does Layer8Insight run on mobile devices?

Not currently. These platforms are in development.
